The intention of this painting was to portray the wolves in a restful state while displaying the Aurora Borealis in a fresh new way. In order to paint the illusion of night successfully and have the subjects come across as believable, I had to incorporate another light source, that of the moon, not shown in the painting. This, combined with the vivid auroral hue and the snow covered ground was enough night light to illuminate the foreground to create this scene.
